How To Get The Gianluigi Buffon Haircut (The Best Throwbacks)

    by Zheelana Cottam

Italian footballer Gianluigi Buffon, 43, is widely regarded as one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time - or at least one of the top ten! He holds the record for the longest time in a Serie A without conceding a goal as well as having 350 clean sheets. Up until 2018 Buffon was also the most expensive goalkeeper in the world when Juventus paid a whopping 52 million euros to have him on their team.

Buffon is also widely regarded as one of the sexiest footballers of all time too. It’s easy to see why with his brooding eyes, 5 o’clock shadow and long dark hair. While we put a lot of this down to serious good Italian genes… the other part definitely has something to do with the 50s and 90s bad boy hairstyles this goalkeeper likes to pull off.

Check out how to recreate two of Gianluigi Buffon’s haircuts below.

Haircut 1: 50s slicked over side parting

Buffon rocks this 50s greaser throwback with a flare. To recreate this haircut, ask your barber to leave the top a medium length, around six inches long, put in a side parting. You want to keep the back and sides fairly long, around two to three inches. To make things look neater you can gradually taper the hair off towards the back.

    How to style it:

    • Start with towel dried hair. This means your hair should feel damp to touch but not dripping. Then it's time to add some hair wax as a pre-styler. We recommend our NO GUNK Styling Funk. Scoop up a pea sized amount on your fingers and warm the product well. Then apply it thoroughly through the top of the hair from root to tip.
    • To give the style some extra hold, use some of our Matte Lava Clay. Using only a small amount of product, apply it to the front and sides of the hair in the same fashion as the hair wax.
    • Using your comb create a side parting then comb the hair back and away from the face. Then in true Gianluigi Buffon fashion grab a lock of hair and allow it to fall onto your forehead.
    • If you’re worried about your hair moving throughout the day just grab your hairdryer and switch it to the cold setting. Give your hair a quick blast to solidify everything and set it all in place.

    Haircut 2: 90s middle parting

Throwbacks are all the rage these days, so we included this Buffon 90s middle part. Numerous celebrities have rocked this haircut from football pro David Beckham to legendary movie stars like Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, and River Phoenix. Not to mention that the hairstyle is trending with Tik Tok influencers.

This Gianluigi Buffon haircut is best achieved after a good four months of growth at the least. Then head to your barber and ask them to neaten everything up with a soft scissor cut. This will allow you to keep the length and remove any split ends in the process. Then create that middle parting and cut the fringe about an inch or so beneath your eyes. For the back and sides start from a #3 at the base of the hair and slowly taper up towards the top until you get to a #4.

For a modern take on this 90s recreation, you can pair your middle parting with a skin fade instead.

    How to style:

    • Start with towel dried hair.
    • You will need some hair cream to keep your hair floppy and relaxed. Apply a pea-sized amount of our Funky Flex Cream to give your hair a strong but firm hold, so you are able to re-shape it thought the day as well as adding a subtle, natural looking shine. Hair cream, also known as styling cream, is light so works perfectly with these longer hairstyles as it doesn’t weigh the hair down.  It will also keep those flyways at bay without your hair looking greasy.
    • Using a comb create your middle parting and separate your hairs. Now, you can either let your hair air dry or you can grab your hairdryer and, whilst on a medium heat, blow the hair straight down until it is dry.
